Bandera del Reino Unido The Dutch language is a West Germanic language quite close to German, to Frisian languages and also to English, but Dutch has more germanic roots than English in its vocabulary. On the other hand, English has a lot of loanwords taken from either Latin or French (aprox. 50% of its vocabulary), that is why Dutch is more related to German. Afrikaans is almost the same language, because it derives directly from the Dutch spoken dialects in the netherlands´ clony South Africa. That is why a Dutch can understand Afrikaans without difficulties, but it will be harder for an Afrikaans speaker to understand Dutch because Dutch has more germanic roots in its vocabulary. Afrikaans is one of the official languages in South Africa , where is the mother tongue of the 13,3% of the population (around 7 million of speakers). But Afrikaans has a lot of importance at achools and also in trade, that is why is so common to find people who speak it as second or even third language in the whole country. Although it is widely understood in Namibia, Afrikaans is there just    a national language, with for example other languages like: Ovambo or German. For this reason the number of Afrikaans speakers in the world reaches the 17 million of people. These two maps show the distribution of the Afrikaans in Namibia and South Africa:

Bandera del Reino Unido Although the United Kingdom of the Netherlands had a really big colonial empire and a great maritime commerce worldwide, its language is only official in these three small countries: Suriname, Belgium and the Netherlands, and also in the following and small overseas territories of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which are Sint Maarten, Aruba und CuraÇao. The number of native speakers of the Dutch language overpasses the 23 million, plus the non-native speakers gets over 28 million worldwide. It is also official in these two international organizations: UNASUR and in the EU. Here you can see a map which shows the ancient Dutch empire´s expansion:
